Moon Viewing Point
Utagawa Hiroshige
1857
Following an evening of entertainment, a courtesan and geisha tidy up under the dawning harvest moon. No. 82 from the series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo (Meisho Edo hyakkei).
Moon viewing, tsukimi, is a longstanding tradition in Japan, celebrated as part of the Mid-Autumn Festival to honour the year’s harvest. People gather under the full moon to feast on seasonal delights such as tsukimi dango (rice and sweet bean dumpling) and satoimo (a starchy root vegetable).
